The intersection of GHG emission from livestock sector, climate change and disaster risk reduction is the primary area of research. The livestock sector is perhaps the largest contributor of GHG emission in Ethiopia. It is also intricately linked to the lives and livelihoods of the vast majority of rural communities. At the same time, climate-induced hazards, such as drought and floods, are major causes of disasters accounting for the majority of loss and damage to the lives and livelihoods of communities. One mitigative measure to reduce the occurrence these disasters requires reducing GHG emissions from the source.
Though Ethiopia is not a significant contributor to GHG emissions, it is nonetheless committed to significantly reduce its share to become a net-zero emitter by 2050. Research thus centers around reducing the effective GHG emission from the livestock sector, particularly abatement of enteric ruminant emission, to contribute to the national strategy for GHG emission reduction. |

Research interest and projects | Research focus on urban and regional development, with an emphasis on the interplay between socioeconomic and spatial dynamics. This explores key topics such as urban development and planning, governance, gender, housing, informal economies, ethnic entrepreneurship, migration, and environmental challenges … with particular interest in issues related to urban renewal, public space governance, industrial clusters, economic zones, industrial parks, sustainable development, value chains, and climate change.
Drawing on a diverse array of theoretical concepts, methodologies, and frameworks, his scholarship provides critical insights into the geography of environment-society relations. His research examine the complexities of urban systems, governance structures, and socioeconomic interactions, especially in rapidly urbanizing regions. Some influential research includes studies on intra-ethnic business networks in the Gurage footwear industry, urban development-induced displacement, and the role of women in the urban informal sector. Published works extend to green infrastructure planning, urban governance approaches, paratransit transport services, and barriers to growth opportunities for microenterprises. Current research projects continue to explore sustainable development strategies, the governance of urban spaces, and the role of industrial clusters in fostering economic resilience in developing economies. |
