April 21, 2025

Ababa University, University of Oslo and ARUA-GUILD hosted an international Sustainability Summit on 12 March 2025 at AAU’s Ras Mekonnen Hall of Sidist Kilo Campus. The summit was co-organized in partnership with University of Malawi, University of Pretoria, and Université Catholique Louvain. This year’s summit was held under the theme “Sustainable Horizons – Navigating Geopolitics, Energy Security, and Green Transitions in Africa”. The summit presented an opportune platform to facilitate sharing of experiences and exchanging of ideas on how to strengthen regional, continental and global collaboration towards achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The summit had a series of three thematic sessions: namely, 1) Geopolitical Shifts and Innovative Financing for Sustainable Development 2) Strengthening Energy Security on the African Continent; and, 3) Promising Practices on Green Transitions in Ethiopia and the Continent. The panels were composed of blue-ribbon panelists representing academia, government and civic society, from Ethiopia and other partner countries. The panels were chaired/moderated by notable scientists in the respective domain. Panelist expounded on their views and fielded questions from both the moderator and audience members.
The summit attracted a large audience of academicians, students, policy-makers and civil society organizations from Ethiopia, other African countries and Europe. The summit was held at a poignant moment when the global geo-political landscape was rapidly shifting with a backdrop of worsening impacts of climate change and overconsumption of natural resources.
